Renuka Viswanathan’s journey has been has been a pathbreaker throughout her life, scaling barriers and opening doors everywhere.

OUTSTANDING ACADEMICS

She graduated with Gold Medal in History, Economics and Political Science. After doing her Masters in English, she completed a PhD in Public Finance from Paris university. She is the only Indian to be awarded a post-doctoral degree (doctorat  d’état) in an Arts subject from any French university.

Government of India Secretary for Rural Development, who launched NREGA and transformed the lives of crores of poor people in the country

• First woman Deputy Commissioner of any district in Karnataka, serving first in Uttara Kannada District and then posted by the Chief Minister, Shri Gundu Rao to the sensitive Dharwar District for a rare second term

She has a deep knowledge and experience of Karnataka. She stands shoulder to shoulder with people, empathises with their issues and most importantly, has implemented sustainable solutions wherever she has served. Her integrity is unquestionable. Even before it became famous, during her days as an IAS officer, she always personally drove her own car to office and never used a red light or siren!

GRASSROOTS SOCIAL ACTIVIST

After retiring from IAS, Renuka has been grassroots volunteer with the Aam Aadmi Party, Karnataka for four years. She has worked tirelessly for the poor and underprivileged in the slums and other areas of Bangalore.

Helped hundreds of families by getting children admitted into schools under the Right to Education (RTE)

Tirelessly fought for women self-help groups of Pourakarmikas to take ownership of solid waste management contracts from politically powerful middlemen.

Worked to improve the process of getting eKhatas from BBMP and making it more transparent.

Renuka has written prolifically on issues of governance, covering public finance, economic policy, public administration and gender.
